This hasn't been a great week for DLA Piper's international operations. Just days after its Moscow office was raided by Russian authorities in a crime investigation (see story), the firm has brought down the axe on nine per cent of its Middle East workforce.

With limited alternative job opportunities in the Gulf region at present and patchy local employment protections, it should come as no surprise that one local source reported "lots of tears in the Dubai office on Tuesday".

The firm has a stated objective to be "the leading business law firm in the Middle East". But, as the latest problems follows cuts of eight per cent of the regional fee-earning workforce and the collapse of a number of regional alliances, perhaps "leading" should be replaced by "bleeding" (see story).
