School takeover
-----------------------------------------------------------
The world's leading law firms operate on a transatlantic basis so a joint US/UK legal education provider would seem to make sense.

Not to be outdone by Kaplan, the UK's BPP Holdings, which owns BPP Law School, is looking keenly at a tie-up with America's Apollo Group, which is part owned by private equity firm Carlyle Group. Through its UK subsidiary, Apollo has made a £303.5m cash offer for BPP (see story).

The deal is different from the arrangement between Kaplan and Nottingham Law School because education provider Kaplan runs Nottingham's London courses for it. On the BPP deal, Apollo, which was designed specifically to invest in international education services, is looking to take over BPP.

Despite the company's experience in the UK educational market, US investment is new to BPP and could present challenges.

As with transatlantic mergers between law firms, combining US and UK cultures can be tough. At this stage details of the BPP deal remain scant but, with two vastly different legal education systems on either side of the pond, Apollo could find it tricky to make its mark in the UK.

Law students are facing uncertain times on both sides of the Atlantic, with firms scaling back their recruitment. From a UK perspective, BPP students will at least be able to take some comfort from the fact that the takeover is not expected to have any impact this academic year or on those who have accepted a place on BPP courses starting in September 2009.
