THE LAWYER IN NEW YORK - 25/06/2009

It was a big night in London on Tuesday (23 March) and a particularly good one for Sullivan & Cromwell.

The elite New York firm scooped the International Law Firm of the Year prize at this year's The Lawyer Awards at the Grosvenor House Hotel (see story).

The firm emerged victorious from a shortlist that featured Weil Gotshal, K&L Gates, Dewey & LeBoeuf, Paul Hastings, Uría Menéndez and an aggressively expansive Greenberg Traurig, which is finally making its mark in London (see story).

Sullivan's London co-managing partner Rob Schlein was on hand to pick up the gong, awarded to the firm in recognition of the outstanding and central role it has played during the financial crisis.

US firms were well represented on other awards too. Dewey & LeBoeuf's chairman Steve Davis came third in the much-coveted Partner of the Year category, Paul Hastings' Chris Bracebridge was shortlisted in Assistant Solicitor of the Year and Reed Smith picked up the gong for Middle East Team of the Year.

Elsewhere, Howrey's IP expertise helped it win the TMT Team of the Year prize while Sullivan (and Shearman & Sterling) both featured in the Infrastructure/Energy Team of the Year award.

With such an international bent to many of the awards it was fitting that the firm that won the top prize - Law Firm of the Year - was Norton Rose. On the day it picked up the prize , the UK-headquartered firm unveiled its tie-up with Australian heavyweight Deacons (see story).

Signs that despite the financial crisis, the best in class firms still see the appeal of spreading their wings.
