THE LAWYER IN NEW YORK - 18/06/2009

Brazil: a tough nut to crack
-----------------------------------------------------------
Gibson Dunn & Crutcher may have announced its launch in Sao Paulo but the details are yet to be ironed out.
Earlier this week, TheLawyer.com reported that the firm was launching its first outpost in the Brazilian legal market, relocating New York partner Lisa Alfaro to Sao Paulo (see story).
The firm has big plans for its new base. But, with approval from the Brazilian bar still weeks away, Gibson Dunn may want to exercise some caution.
It is certainly being cautious with staffing.
Alfaro will be joined by just one associate from New York. Starting off small, Alfaro will be supported by the firm?s Manhattan-based Latin American head Kevin Kelley and corporate partner William Campbell.
Naturally, Gibson Dunn has high hopes for its new office. But competition in Sao Paulo is tough.
"It will be very challenging for any firm that is launching in Brazil now," argues a partner from a US firm competitor. "Gibson Dunn has done some work down here but it won?t be easy to compete with the likes of us who?ve been here for a long time."
Is Gibson Dunn up to the challenge? Announcing the launch - however small it may be - weeks before approval is expected suggests a certain amount of confidence.
From little acorns ?
