Norton Rose today became the first major UK firm to break into Australia - the land of cork hats, cold beer and some of the most dangerous creatures on earth.

The firm's tie-up with Sydney-headquartered Deacons will create a £420m turnover business, and give Norton Rose an outpost in a country where few UK lawyers have been brave enough to tread (see story).

The move is certainly a bold one. Other UK firms have tried and failed to colonise this harsh land, where even the plant life can kill you.

Clifford Chance broke off its merger talks with Mallesons Stephen Jaques at the end of last year largely because of the multitude of venomous snakes in the country. Okay, so that's not strictly true - there was also the small matter of taking on masses of lawyers in an already congested legal market during a global economic crisis (see story).

Even jet-setting DLA Piper has settled for an association with Phillips Fox rather than a more formal tie-up, perhaps put off by the presence of the world's largest reptile - no, not Kerry Packer but the saltwater crocodile. Although the gulf in profitability between the two may also have played a part.

But fearless Norton Rose CEO Peter Martyr has no such worries. For him the tie-up is all about Asia, where both firms have profitable offices and ambitious expansion plans. That Australia is already over-lawyered, and brimming with deadly wildlife, was not enough to dampen his enthusiasm.

Now, if Norton Rose chairman Stephen Parish can just conquer his fear of spiders?
